Minor PAN Card: How to Apply for a PAN Card for a Child

Every Indian citizen who pays taxes gets a unique identification number known as a PAN or Permanent Account Number Card. A PAN card is necessary for all tax-paying entities, including individuals, corporations, and local governments. The government can easily record all tax-related information for each PAN card bearer because it links all taxable financial activities. People of Indian descent, non-resident Indians, and foreigners with business interests in the country are also covered. A PAN card is necessary for several purposes, such as tax payments, real estate and vehicle purchases, large investments, and cash deposits. Although the majority of people apply for PAN cards after turning 18, minors can also obtain PAN cards from the government agency that provides them, NSDL.

Requirement of a Minor PAN Card

Minors must have a PAN card in the following situations:

  • In cases where parents want to designate their minor child as a nominee for their stocks, investments, or other financial instruments.

  • When parents invest in their child's name.

  • It is necessary when opening a child's bank account or a juvenile daughter's Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana account.

Documents Required for a Minor PAN Card

Three documents must be uploaded or attached to the PAN card application: proof of age, proof of address, and proof of identity. Documentation of the parent or guardian's Proof of Address (POA) and Proof of Identity (POI) must be uploaded for minors. However, the proof of date of birth document of the minor should be uploaded or attached, not the parent or guardian's documents. For POA and POI, the minor's Aadhaar card—not that of their parents or guardians—should be uploaded or attached when the minor's Aadhaar card is chosen as proof of address and identity. Below is a list of documents that can serve as identification, proof of address, and proof of age.

Conclusion

A minor can easily apply for a PAN card online or in person. However, the parent's documents must be uploaded or submitted if the minor's Aadhaar card is unavailable. The PAN card is useful because it serves as identification documentation and is necessary for any financial transactions made in the minor's name. The minor must update their PAN card with their signature, photo, and current, accurate information when they are eighteen.

FAQ

Q1. What is the difference between minor and major PAN card?

People under eighteen are eligible for the minor PAN card, while those over eighteen are eligible for the main PAN card. Minor PAN cards lack the minor's signature, identification, and proof of address. The most recent photo, signature, proof of identity, and address documents will be on the major or regular PAN card.

Q2. What is the minimum age to apply for a minor PAN card?

The Income Tax Act does not specify a minimum age to apply for a PAN card. A child under five is eligible to apply for a PAN card.

Q3. How can I convert my minor PAN card to a major PAN card?

By going to the NSDL website and choosing and completing the "Changes or Corrections in existing PAN data/Reprint of PAN card" option, you can change your minor PAN card into a primary or regular PAN card.

Q4. What happens to the minor PAN card after they turn 18 years old?

The PAN card cannot be used for identity because it lacks the minor's signature and current photo. When the minor child turns 18, they must reapply for an updated or corrected PAN card with the most recent signature, photo, and supporting documentation. The PAN number, however, doesn't change.

Q5. Is a minor required to link PAN with Aadhaar?

Yes. All PAN cards must be connected to the UID card to keep it from becoming inactive.

Q6. Do I have to pay the same application fee when I modify my minor PAN card?

After achieving the majority, the minor PAN card must be updated with the same PAN card application fees. The cost of an updated PAN card varies based on whether a new physical PAN card is needed and how the documents are submitted.

Q7. How long is a minor PAN card valid for?

As long as the child reaches the age of 18, the Minor PAN card is valid for the holder's lifetime, even if they request an update or correction. The card must be updated to include the child's signature and photo, making it usable as identification. PAN cards are valid for the holder's lifetime after they are updated.

Q8. Is it mandatory for a minor to have a PAN card?

Children under five can use a minor PAN card as identification if you want to designate your minor child as a nominee for your property or other investments. A minor's PAN card information is essential when making investments.
